When I’m not playing chess…

Posted by David Smerdon on Apr 16, 2016 in Economics, Non-chess |

Recently someone asked me what I did “when you’re not playing chess.” I found the question quite comical because I’m not playing chess the vast majority of the time. Still, occasionally I get mistaken for a professional player (albeit a weak one).

Those who’ve read my blog before won’t be surprised to read that I’m a researcher. I’m currently finishing a PhD in economics, with a focus on social and psychological topics. Recently I got the chance to present my current project at the General Sir John Monash symposium, held in Oxford. My work’s about finding the best ways to resettle refugees smoothly and efficiently into the community.

The presentation was pecha kucha style, which was weird but fun: 20 slides, 20 seconds each, no control over the speed. The organisers have made the presentations available online, so if you want a quick glimpse at what I do when I’m “not playing chess”, check out the video below.

Nice one! Thanks. Well, that’s a good news story. [thinks: gee, maybe economists aren’t so bad after all..]
p.s. May I suggest that ‘untangle’ or ‘separate’ would be better than ‘disentangle’.

That is a very inspiring presentation. I hope those Australian politicians who are caught in the trap of following our worse rather than our better angels get to see it!

Lets just ignore the fact that 80% of todays “refugees” are young muslim males–and are committing: violent terrorist acts, gang rapes, forming paedophile gangs, sexual assaults, robberies, roaming in gangs. (Please read the actual news, not your left wing toilet paper)

There is an obvious global agenda to decrease white birth rates everywhere and replace whites with the brown hoard, who multiply 5 times as fast. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svQQg0yxSLE)

Only question is: why are people like you shilling for this?
I bet you dont have children–because you obviously arent thinking of their future. Are you Soros funded?

I don’t know which toilet paper you are referring to. Typically I try to avoid any ‘winged’ news, left or right, and just stick to data. 72% of recent Syrian refugees to Europe are male (I guess this is the stat you are referring to; overall, global refugee intake from all countries is evenly split on gender). 46% of recent refugees to the US were Muslim.

No, I am not Soros-funded. Actually, I could do with some funding.

Thanks for reading and replying to my comment.

I was referring to fairfax, ABC, SBS etc which filter, manipulate news and hide inconvenient truths (for eg they got the cronulla riots completely backward–I hope you can research the other side of the story)

Did you follow the recent muslim migrant backpacker in Australia who went on a 3 hour knife murder rampage?

I like that you like facts! Please also research rapes, violent crime stats in high percentage migrant areas in EU (no-go-zones for whites–for eg Malmo in Sweden). Or just read about the daily terror attacks in EU–or mass sexual assaults of women at festivals and the like.

If you’d like something closer to home in the chess world:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3814137/World-chess-uproar-women-told-play-year-s-world-championships-Iran-wearing-hijabs.html

You are obviously a logical person–I hope you do just look at facts and reassess your views.

I would also highly recommend this short video on why immigration actually hurts the 3rd world:

Thanks again for reading.
Im curious about your views–and will stay posted to see your take and ideas on these subjects.
